Overview

Huchuy Qosqo & Machu Picchu

This beautiful trip goes through the Sacred Valley in the Andes and offers several attractions along the way for nature lovers. Huchuy Qosqo, meaning «Little Cusco» in Quechua, was once a royal estate of the Inca emperor  Viracocha, and its terraces and stone structures remain remarkably well preserved today, offering a quieter alternative to the more crowded Inca sites nearby.

You’ll walk along scenic trails with wonderful views over the Pisac Valley, Lamay, Calca, and Urubamba, and see many healing plants once used by Andean people as their main source of medicine. Along the way, you’ll pass small Andean communities still living much as their ancestors did, farming these same valleys for generations. You’ll also see llamas and sheep belonging to local farms — a great opportunity to interact with locals and learn about their daily lives. For those looking to combine culture with adventure, this trek pairs naturally with treks like our Lares Trek to Machu Picchu, which explores a different corner of the Sacred Valley. To make your journey more comfortable, we’ll bring mules to carry your bags for the duration of the trip.

Briefing to Huchuy Qosqo Trek

We’ll meet you at your hotel the day before departure to walk you through the trip in detail. Your guide will explain each day’s itinerary specifically and in detail.

Itinerary

  • After breakfast at your hotel, we’ll pick you up and begin our journey at the community of Patabamba (3,800m). From there, we’ll start hiking along the trail of the last ayllus for about 3 hours before reaching Pukamarca (4,100m), a small Inca archaeological site. We’ll stop for lunch there, followed by some time to rest before continuing on to the archaeological site of Huchuy Qosqo (3,600m), a downhill walk of about 1 hour 30 minutes along the Inca Trail.

From there, we’ll follow the valley through the mountains, taking in impressive views of the Pitusiray and Sahuasiray mountains, part of the Vilcanota mountain range that extends toward the jungle region of Cusco.
