Early pickup and breakfast. We pick you up at your hotel in Cusco around 4:00 am and drive about 3 hours to the trailhead. On the way we stop for breakfast in a local village.
Hike to Vinicunca. From the trailhead, we hike gradually uphill with your guide, taking breaks to acclimatize. At the summit you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the colorful mountain, the Red Valley and the snow-capped Ausangate range.
Return to Cusco. After time for photos, we descend to the trailhead, have lunch, and drive back to Cusco, arriving around 4:00–5:00 pm.
One or two days before your tour, you’ll meet your guide for a briefing. They’ll explain the route, the altitude, what to pack, and answer all your questions about the hike.
Rainbow Mountain is higher than any point on the Inca Trail, so acclimatization matters. Spend at least 2–3 days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley first, drink plenty of water, and walk at a slow, steady pace (read about altitude sickness). Horses are available at the trailhead for those who need help on the way up.
Rainbow Mountain is the perfect final adventure of a multi-day trip, when you’re already acclimatized. Our 12-Day Peru Inca Trail Experience combines the Classic Inca Trail, the Manu jungle and ends with Rainbow Mountain. For a trek off the beaten path, try the Inca Quarry Trail Trek.
