Day 2: Cusco Tour - Half Day

Discover the soul of Cusco in just one unforgettable afternoon
Our Cusco City Tour is more than just sightseeing—it's an immersive experience that brings history to life in the ancient capital of the Inca Empire.

We begin with a visit to the magnificent Cusco Cathedral, a colonial masterpiece that blends Spanish architecture with Andean spirituality. Then, we explore the legendary Temple of the Sun – Qorikancha, where Inca walls of polished stone still whisper stories of ceremonies once dedicated to the powerful Sun God, Inti.

From there, we head to the outskirts of the city to visit four extraordinary archaeological sites:

  • Sacsayhuamán, with its massive stone walls that continue to puzzle engineers and historians alike.

  • Q’enqo, a spiritual labyrinth carved directly into the rock.

  • Puka Pukara, the “Red Fortress” that once stood guard over the sacred valleys.

  • Tambomachay, a ceremonial site devoted to water, renewal, and purification.

This afternoon tour allows you to acclimatize in the morning and then dive into the fascinating past of Cusco as the sun casts its golden light over ancient stones.

Day 3: Cusco - Sacred Valley Ollantaytambo

A journey through living culture, ancient engineering, and breathtaking Andean landscapes

Our day begins with a visit to Chinchero, known as the "village of the rainbow." Sitting high in the Andes at over 3,700 meters (12,000 ft), Chinchero preserves Inca agricultural terraces, a colonial church built atop ancient Inca foundations, and vibrant Quechua communities. Here, we’ll visit a local textile center where Andean women proudly demonstrate traditional weaving techniques using natural dyes—ancestral knowledge passed down through generations.

Next, we head to the fascinating site of Moray, an ancient Inca agricultural laboratory. Its series of circular terraces descend into natural depressions, creating microclimates that once allowed the Incas to experiment with crops at various altitudes—a true marvel of ecological science.

Nearby, we explore the Salt Mines of Maras, a surreal landscape of over 3,000 salt ponds cascading down the hillside. These pre-Inca salt pans have been used for centuries and are still harvested by local families using traditional methods that connect them directly with their ancestors and the Earth.

We finish the day in the iconic Inca town of Ollantaytambo, where history lives in every stone. This archaeological complex features massive terraces, ceremonial temples, and fortified walls that once protected the Sacred Valley. Strolling through its narrow cobblestone streets, you’ll witness the remarkable fusion of ancient engineering and living Andean culture. Ollantaytambo is also the gateway for many travelers heading to Machu Picchu.

This full-day tour blends majestic landscapes, authentic cultural encounters, and a deep connection to the spiritual and agricultural legacy of the Incas.

With Inca Trail For Less, the Sacred Valley isn’t just visited it’s experienced, understood, and honored.

Day 4: Cusco - Lares Trek - Hot Spring - Wacahuasi

A journey through healing waters, living culture, and the high Andes

We begin our adventure early in the morning with a scenic drive from Cusco into the heart of the Sacred Andes. As we leave the city behind, the landscape transforms into a tapestry of towering mountains, remote valleys, and traditional Quechua villages untouched by time.

After approximately 3 hours, we arrive at the natural hot springs of Lares—a sacred retreat nestled in the mountains. Here, you’ll have the chance to soak in mineral-rich thermal pools, known by locals for their healing and energizing properties. It’s the perfect way to relax your body and mind before beginning the hike.

After enjoying lunch, we start our trek towards the remote Andean community of Wacahuasi, located at over 3,800 meters (12,460 feet) above sea level. The trail offers breathtaking views of snowcapped peaks, crystal-clear streams, and herds of llamas and alpacas grazing freely. Along the way, we pass through isolated communities where Quechua remains the main language, and the vibrant traditions of the Andes are alive in every smile and handmade textile.

Upon arriving in Wacahuasi, we set up camp and enjoy a peaceful evening surrounded by pure mountain air and starry skies. You’ll also have the special opportunity to meet local families and learn about their weaving techniques, daily life, and deep connection to the land.

With Inca Trail For Less, Day 1 of the Lares Trek is not just a hike it's an authentic cultural experience that brings you closer to the heart of the Andes.

Day 5: Wacahuasi - Ipsay Summit - Patacancha - Ollantaytmbo

A day of high mountain magic, sacred silence, and timeless traditions

After a hearty Andean breakfast and a warm farewell from the local families in Wacahuasi, we begin our ascent toward the highest point of the trek: the Ipsaycocha Pass, located at an impressive 4,400 meters (14,435 ft) above sea level.

This is the most breathtaking day of the journey—both physically and visually. As we climb, the scenery transforms into a dramatic world of towering snow-capped peaks, crystal-clear streams, and wide-open Andean skies. Llamas and alpacas dot the trail, adding a sense of timelessness to this sacred landscape. Upon reaching the top of the pass, we pause to breathe in the thin mountain air and offer a few coca leaves to Pachamama, Mother Earth, in gratitude for guiding us safely through her domain.

From here, we descend to the peaceful shores of Ipsaycocha Lake, a hidden gem tucked between the peaks. We'll stop here for lunch, surrounded by serenity and panoramic views that defy description.

The trail then leads us gently downhill to the traditional community of Patacancha, a village where Quechua is still spoken, and ancient Inca traditions are a part of everyday life. The people here are known for their vibrant textiles, woven with symbols that tell stories older than the Empire itself.

From Patacancha, we board our private transport and descend into the Sacred Valley, arriving in the historic town of Ollantaytambo. Whether you spend the night here or catch the train to Machu Picchu, this marks the perfect transition between the wild beauty of the Lares mountains and the majestic ruins that await.

With Inca Trail For Less, the Lares Trek is more than a hike it's a path to living history, soul-stirring landscapes, and meaningful human connections.
