If you are willing to hike the beautiful Salkantay mountain via inca trail, we are offering you a unique trek that won´t disappoint you. As part of the highest mountain in the world, also higher than any mountain of North America, Mount Salkantay (6,271 m / 20,574 feet) will show you the wonders of the Andes: blue lakes, stunning glaciers, cloud forest and rain forest.
As a nature lover, you will absolutely adore the lush green vegetation in the last part of the trek and the incomparable variety of flora and fauna all along the way. The first two days follow one of the classic Salkantay trails. We leave the common path on the third day to reach the Inca Trail, where you will have the great opportunity to discover many archeological ruins.
Km 82 is the point where people enter making the 4-day Inca trail to Machu Picchu. This first day entering km 82 people hike all day to the community of Wayllabamba, and our first day destination is to walk on the day Inca trail of departure people enter and we leave for that starting point to take our train to aguas calientes town or machu picchu
All the information about the trek will be given to you 1 or 2 days before. Your guide will meet you at your hotel in Cusco, where you will have the opportunity to ask all questions you need.
The planning of your briefing will be step by step.
Early in the morning, we will come pick you up at your hotel and arrive at Mollepata after a 3 hours drive. We will have breakfast at one of our local houses before keep driving a little more to Soraypampa. During the ride, you will enjoy seeing the beautiful Salkantay and Humantay mountains, but also the lush green vegetation and the fields of local families growing lima beans, quinoa, potatoes, etc.
The trek will start at Soraypampa (3,800 m/12,467 ft). We will meet our support staff there, who will get everything ready for the hike and load the equipment onto horses.
We will first walk to the wonderful Umantay lake, where you will have time to relax and take pictures. And then go back down to Soraypampa to officially start the trek.
It will be quite a hard day, as we will have to walk all the way up to Ichupata (4,300 m / 14,104 ft) in the upper valley, which will take us approximately 5 to 6 hours. We will stop for lunch at Salkantaypampa, and then at Ichupata to stay overnight. We will set the camp, have happy hour and a delicious dinner.
Today, we will get up early and take a nice breakfast before starting the 3-4 hours climb towards the Incachiriasca pass (4850m/15908ft), the highest of the entire journey. We will be enjoying the views over Apu Salkantay and the wonderful glacial moraines, and stop for a while at the top to take pictures.
To reach Sisaypampa, our lunch spot on a flat area with amazing views over the Salkantay Valley, we will have to descend and we will observe condors along the way.
After lunch, we will keep going until the Pampacahuana community (3,700 m / 12,136 ft), located next to an original Inca canal, and camp for the night.
Today will be very interesting as we leave the Salkantay trek to reach the Classic Inca Trail. We start walking downhill for about 2 hours from Pampacahuana to Paucarcancha 3133 m / 10,276 ft and discover one of the Inca sites.
In order to reach km 82, the beginning of the Inca trail, we will then have to go downhill for about 5 hours. On the way, you will see the Inca site called Llactapata, the first on the Inca trail. There, our chef will cook us a delicious lunch.
Our private van will be waiting for us after lunch to drive us to Ollantaytambo (2,792 m/9,158 ft), where we will catch the train to Aguas Calientes.
Once we get there, you will check in to your hotel room. We will have the opportunity to relax in hot springs before dinner, which will be taken at the finest restaurant.
We will have to get up early to have breakfast and catch the first bus going to Machu Picchu (5:30am). You will appreciate the wonderful sunrise over the site, and once getting there, follow the 2 hours walking tour.
If you are willing to go on top of Huayna Picchu, the hike starts at 10 am. If not, or after climbing the mountain, you will have free time to explore the site before going back to Aguas Calientes by bus.
Once there, you will catch the train to Ollantaytambo and then go on our private van to Cusco to drop you off at your hotel. The time of arrival depends on the time of your train ticket.
